Ashley Flores-Gonzalez Paralegal Studies
I am the first generation in my family to graduate. Since I was little, I started seeing a lot of problems in the world, especially in the Hispanic community, and I'm like, "I want to do something about it." Just little by little, I started doing more advocacy and I actually did participate in Advocacy Day here at AACC. So that's the motivation that wants me to become a paralegal study.

Being at AACC, helped me to realize you'll be able to find opportunities if you really look for them. I'm able to try to go for so many things, and I was able to meet a lot of other people and just really try to get things in my resume. And now my resume is getting stacked.

I knew I was going to have a little bit of struggle being an older student. It's been a while since I've had to write and do math. The virtual tutoring center is amazing. They are there from 8 to 4:30, I believe, so before you go start your day, you can hop on and ask questions.

I'm excited to start my first year of college and dive into new experiences, both academically and socially. I look forward to many opportunities to join clubs, attend events and make lasting memories with new friends.

I always saw college as this big, challenging thing. I thought I would just be alone, studying in my room for hours or at the library, but there's so many different resources that will help you out. And it's also very manageable with your time because I feel like the professors really understand that you have a life outside of just college. I was really scared coming into AACC, but then everything changed completely.

The most beautiful thing about community college to me is the community. That's what we need in order to progress in life, to just be able to have a community and environment around you that's going to support and enrich and just help you grow into a much better person.

I feel most grateful for the connections that I've made while being at AACC. I've met so many people in so many different ways, through clubs I'm a part of, through clubs I'm not a part of, through events at the school, through classes. Some of my best friends have been people that I just happen to have a class with, and you walk up to someone after class and you're like, "Hey, I really love your vibe," or, "You seem really cool. Would you want to go get lunch on campus?" I find that it can be difficult to meet people who are around my age who aren't already at a four-year. And it's nice to find people who are local like that and who are doing similar stuff to me.

I've always been scared to take risks and be a part of the community just because I've always been socially awkward growing up, and so I just never had many friends and I got to a point in life where I'm just like, "Stop being scared, try something new and let's just get out there and just be not afraid of taking risks in life now."

I’ve gained communication skills. I also gained note-taking skills that I've never really had thought of before. Not only Cornell Notes, but also your own way of doing them so that it makes sense to you. Taking notes, really paying attention and building your rapport with not only the professor, but also your classmates really helps.

I'm most grateful to find that I went to community college. I get to learn more things where I'm not used to learning. I want to help people out and show them how the school is and how fun it is.
